ANTIOCH -- A man and woman were hospitalized Tuesday after a head-on collision between a pickup truck and minivan, a fire official said.

Emergency crews were dispatched just after 8:30 a.m. after the truck and minivan collided on Deer Valley Road just north of Empire Line Road, East Contra Costa Fire District Battalion Chief Jake Gonzalez said.

Antioch police were investigating the cause of the crash, and it wasn't immediately known how fast the two vehicles were traveling.

A man driving the minivan was trapped in the vehicle after the crash and was freed with hydraulic machines, Gonzalez said. He had injuries to his legs and a helicopter airlifted him to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, Gonzalez said.

A woman driving the pickup got out of her car before emergency personnel arrived. An ambulance took her to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Antioch, where she was treated for a broken arm and other injuries, Gonzales said.

Both drivers were conscious, alert and able to communicate after the crash, Gonzales said. The two were the only people in either car. Their ages were not released.
