SAN LEANDRO -- Police shut down streets along a quarter-mile radius Thursday afternoon as they chased a man in a stolen vehicle.

San Leandro police were dispatched to the 900 block of Doolittle Drive around 3 p.m. to investigate a possible vehicle theft, said Lt. Randy Brandt, a spokesman for the San Leandro Police Department. The suspect fled, but soon collided with another vehicle on Orchard Avenue near Harlan Street and then fled on foot.

Initial reports said that hazardous materials were inside the vehicle, prompting police to issue a shelter in place order for the neighborhood. Officers set up a perimeter to search for the suspect and soon located 52-year-old Ronald Forbes of Oakland. Investigation of the containers inside the vehicle revealed that the materials were not hazardous and streets were reopened around 4:30 p.m.

Forbes was booked for possessing a stolen vehicle, causing a hit and run and resisting arrest, according to Brandt.
