ANTIOCH -- A man shot and injured by police this week continued to recuperate on Wednesday while the officer responsible was expected to return to work soon, officials said.

The veteran officer, who has not been identified, shot the man in the 1600 block of Sycamore Drive on Monday, Antioch police Capt. Leonard Orman said. The man was carrying a handgun and tried to run away when officers approached, he said.

Police immediately placed the 10-year veteran officer on paid administrative leave, Antioch police Sgt. Tony Morefield said. How long he will remain on leave will be determined by the investigation, but Morefield said it was not expected to be a long absence.

Antioch police, the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office and the county crime lab are investigating the incident.

The shooting was the second in less than three weeks on a densely populated street that carries a reputation as one of the city's most dangerous areas. A 21-year-old man was injured in a shooting in the 1500 block of Sycamore on May 19, one of three such incidents in the neighborhood last month.
