OAKLAND -- A man wanted on suspicion of beating an 89-year-old woman and carjacking her vehicle was arrested Wednesday night in Oakland, police said.

Officials said Wednesday that Terrance James Hardy, 28, has a "history of violent behavior," including possible incidents at three Oakland Public Library branches.

Hardy was arrested around 8 p.m. Wednesday in East Oakland, three days after he allegedly attacked a woman as she sat inside her 1992 Toyota Camry in an El Cerrito parking lot Sunday afternoon. Police said Hardy punched the woman, pulled her from the car, left her in the parking lot and drove off.

On Wednesday, the woman still was recovering at a hospital, police said.

After Sunday's attack, police issued an arrest warrant for Hardy on charges of carjacking and elder abuse causing great bodily injury.

Hardy, who lives in Oakland, was convicted and sent to prison in 2008 for assault with a deadly weapon, officials said, and has had numerous parole violations since.

"He has a very violent history," said El Cerrito detective Sgt. Dave Hartung.

Some of that violence reportedly happened last week at the Golden Gate branch of the Oakland Library.

Hardy allegedly hit a female library employee over the head with a plastic file holder on June 5, sending her to the hospital. The 48-year-old employee has not returned to work, according to Oakland Library Director Gerry Garzon. Library officials called Oakland police after the incident, but the suspect had left by the time officers arrived, he said.

Hardy allegedly was involved in incidents earlier this year at two other library branches in East Oakland on 81st and Bancroft avenues, Garzon said.

After the attack at 1:55 p.m. Sunday in El Cerrito, police said Hardy drove south through the parking lot in the Toyota. It wasn't clear Wednesday night if the car had been recovered.
