SAN LEANDRO - San Leandro police have identified a man arrested on Sunday afternoon on suspicion of possessing a stolen car after a vehicle pursuit and crash.
Timothy Wash, 31, of Richmond, was driving a Honda Accord on Alvarado Street around 5:15 p.m. Sunday when a police officer in a marked police car equipped with a license plate reader learned Wash's vehicle was stolen out of Newark on June 12, police said.
Wash initially pulled over for the officer then sped off to an adjacent street where he drove over a sidewalk and through gravel close to railroad tracks near Williams Street.
He then crashed into railroad crossing arms and ran from the vehicle, police said.
After establishing a perimeter and calling in K-9 units, officers located Wash hiding in a nearby commercial yard where he was taken into custody without further incident, according to police.
He was arrested on suspicion of felony evasion and possessing a stolen vehicle.
Police said Wash was recently paroled from prison and has a history of arrests involving stolen vehicles.
Investigators are working to determine if Wash is involved in other thefts in the area.
