MARTINEZ -- A 29-year-old man was shot by a California Highway Patrol officer in Martinez on Saturday night after leading him on a chase through Contra Costa County with a 7-year-old child in the car, authorities said.
The shooting took place at the culmination of a Highway 4 chase, which ended about 9:45 p.m. near Interstate 680 in Martinez, Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said. The suspect, who has not yet been identified, reportedly let a 7-year-old boy out of his car in the 4600 block of Pacheco Boulevard before ramming a CHP patrol car and trying to hit a Martinez police car, Lee said.
The chase ended when the suspect hit a telephone pole and parked car near Falling Star Drive, then got out of his car with his hands in the waistband of his pants, Lee said. The officer, believing the suspect was reaching for a weapon, fired his gun after the man refused to follow orders.
The suspect, who is not being identified, was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and is expected survive his injuries, Lee said. Neither the child nor the officer was injured in the incident.
According to Lee, investigators found a gun in the man's vehicle and unspecified drugs in¿ his possession. Lee did not say why officers were pursuing the man in the first place.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact detectives at 925-313-2600. The case is being jointly investigated by the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff, District Attorney's Office and the CHP.
