ANTIOCH -- A 27-year-old woman suffered serious injuries Sunday night after the vehicle she was driving slammed into a tree and caught fire, police said.

Officers and rescue personnel were called to Hillcrest Avenue near the intersection of Wild Horse Road at 8:42 p.m., according to Antioch police Lt. Tammany Brooks. The car was on fire when they arrived, and the rescue crews found the woman seriously injured. Police did not say whether the woman was still in the car or if she had been thrown from it.

An air ambulance took the woman to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, according to Brooks. Her condition was not known.

Police are investigating and have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
