SAN LEANDRO -- An elderly woman who has dementia was driving behind her daughter to a rental car company near the Oakland airport late Sunday night but she never arrived and has not been seen since, police said.
Police said 84-year-old Esther Velasquez was driving a 2004 Buick Century and was last seen around 11:30 p.m., police said.
Detectives checked the Automated License Plate Reader database and learned that Velasquez's car was captured on a system camera at 5 a.m. driving through an intersection in Piedmont. It was not known if she was behind the wheel. The California license plate number on the gold Buick is 5EIF841.
Police said Velasquez and her daughter left the Washington Manor area of San Leandro late Sunday, though it was unclear why her daughter let the woman drive. San Leandro police are working with the California Highway Patrol and have sent out a Silver Alert, which alerts all agencies to be on the lookout for Velasquez.
Anyone with information should call the San Leandro Police Department at 510-577-3230. Anonymous tips can be left at 510-577-3278 or by texting SLPD and the tip to 87411.
