HAYWARD -- Firefighters are asking residents to help reduce wildfire risks in the hills.

A planning session will be held Saturday to devise community fuel reduction projects and set priorities. Residents can share what they see as fire hazards, and firefighters will talk about what people can do to reduce the amount of fuel around their homes.

The fire department is providing free chipping of cleared vegetation for people who live in targeted areas, such as Ziele Creek near Garin Regional Park.

The meeting with Hayward hills and Fairview residents is 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Stonebrae Elementary School multipurpose room, 28761 Hayward Blvd. For more information, call Fire Marshal Andrew Westfield at 510-583-4912 or Cheryl Miller at 510-536-0143.
