Garbage truck driver trapped after crash
A garbage truck driver was trapped in his truck briefly Monday morning after he crashed into a utility pole and live power lines dropped near his rig, authorities said.
The Alameda County Waste Management driver was not injured but had to be pulled from the truck by fire crews and was transported to a hospital for an evaluation.
Fire crews were called to Davis Street and Doolittle Drive in San Leandro at 9:05 a.m., said Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles.
PG&E crews also responded and secured the lines before the driver was pulled from the truck, Knowles said.
The crash severely damaged both overhead and underground utility equipment, said Tamar Sarkissian, a PG&E spokeswoman.
Sarkissian said anyone who sees downed power lines should avoid them and call 911 and PG&E immediately.
