MARTINEZ -- Free weekly stop-smoking classes will be offered by the Contra Costa Health Services Department's Tobacco Cessation Program beginning Aug. 14.
Classes will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays for seven weeks beginning Aug. 14 at the Contra Costa County Administration Building, 651 Pine St., Room 101, Martinez.
The classes use the "Freedom from Smoking" curriculum developed by the American Lung Association and are available free to anyone 18 or older who wants to quit smoking. Because space is limited, participants are urged to register soon by calling 855-421-3400.
Similar classes have been offered in Pittsburg, where another seven-week course will begin Aug. 13. Classes will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays at the Pittsburg Health Center, 2311 Loveridge Road.
According to the Health Services Department, tobacco use continues to be a leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and quitting smoking is the first step to leading a longer, healthier life.
