OAKLAND -- A 19-year-old man has been charged with murder in the Aug. 1 killing of another man during a drive-by shooting in East Oakland, authorities said Monday.
Besides the murder count, Daniel Estrella is also charged with felon in possession of a firearm in the slaying of Daniel Ellis, 21.
Ellis was walking on the sidewalk in the 2700 block of International Boulevard about 7:20 p.m. Aug. 1 when someone who was in a car shot him.
Ellis, who lived in the area, was able to make it to the 1400 block of Mitchell Street a short distance away before he collapsed and died.
Sgt. Eric Milina said the two men had mutual friends.
Milina said Estrella was identified as the gunman by witnesses and he was arrested Aug. 6 outside his home on East 18th Street. Estrella refused to talk to police and investigators are not sure of the motive in the shooting.
According to court documents, Estrella has two prior felony convictions. One was in November 2013 for grand theft from the person and the other in June 2013 for evading a police officer. He was on probation for both convictions at the time of the shooting, authorities said.
Estrella is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
