SAN LEANDRO -- An Oakland man who stole a car was arrested Monday morning after police cornered him inside a shed in a residential San Leandro neighborhood -- and he busted out of the shed and was taken down by a police dog.
Police responded to the 1100 block of Victoria Avenue in San Leandro around 1 a.m. for a report that a Nissan Altima had just been stolen. Officers searched the area and located the car parked nearby.
The suspect, identified as Juan Amezquita, 37, of Oakland, was sitting inside, but ran away after seeing officers, escaping into the nearby neighborhood. Officers used a search dog to locate Amezquita inside a utility shed in a backyard.
Just as they were preparing to arrest him, Amezquita broke through the shed's side wall and again attempted to flee. He was arrested with the help of a police dog.
Inside the stolen Nissan Altima, police found a ballistic vest, drugs and tools commonly used in auto thefts. Amezquita was also in possession of a gun that had been reported stolen in Klamath Falls, Oregon a few weeks earlier, police said.
Amezquita, who is on probation for an attempted auto theft, was held on suspicion of auto theft, possession of a stolen firearm, and narcotics charges.
