SAN LEANDRO -- The Alameda County District Attorney has filed charges against a 21-year-old resident in connection with racially-motivated graffiti found at a school district's office this week, police said Thursday.
Detectives arrested Cody Sisson around 4 p.m. Wednesday on the 1200 block of Manor Boulevard, according to San Leandro police. The suspect lives near the San Leandro Unified School District annex office where the graffiti was found.
Police found the suspect by reviewing crime activity that occurred in the area throughout the weekend. Detectives narrowed their focus on Sisson, who drew suspicion after finding that he had been stopped in the area at 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Officers believe the incident happened sometime between Friday evening and early Monday, San Leandro police Lt. Robert McManus said in a statement Wednesday.
The suspect was arrested while riding a BMX bicycle that police believe had been recently spray painted white and red -- the same colors used in the racist graffiti.
Sisson was initially arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs, as well as a probation violation and other unnamed charges, and was later charged with felony vandalism due to damage from racial slurs sprayed onto the school district's doors, police said.
"This was upsetting to our San Leandro community," McManus said in a statement Thursday. "Throughout the day, we learned how this crime disturbed many others throughout the Bay Area. We knew that time was of the essence in solving this, so all investigative resources were dedicated to this case."
"Without a doubt, it was extremely disturbing to know that this occurred in our town — something that we, as San Leandreans, refuse to allow in this community. Our department is bothered that it occurred here, but relieved that we quickly identified and arrested the suspect responsible for this unacceptable crime."
Sisson will appear in Alameda County Superior Court Friday.
