BRENTWOOD -- The REI store, one of the anchors of The Streets of Brentwood shopping center, closed its doors suddenly Friday, citing poor sales.

REI, which sells outdoor recreation gear, sporting goods and clothing, has been located near the main Sand Creek Road entrance since The Streets opened five years ago. A recording on the store's telephone line Friday said: "It has been a pleasure helping you get ready for outdoor adventures through this location. We look forward to serving you at one of our 15 other Northern California stores."

REI spokeswoman Libby Catalinich said the company is looking to relocate the store's full-time employees to other area stores. The five full-time and 30 part-time Brentwood employees will be paid through February, and some will receive severance pay, she said.

"We tried very hard, but the store simply didn't generate enough revenue," Catalinich stated. "We shared this news with our employees early today and are focused on helping them through this transition."

Regular shoppers of the Brentwood store were notified of the closure via email, Catalinich said.

"We truly appreciate the support we had in the community and apologize for any inconvenience," she wrote in an email. "The Bay Area remains REI's largest single market. We have a half million active members who rely on us for inspiration, knowledge, and gear and apparel."

A post on The Streets of Brentwood's Facebook page Friday said the shopping center was surprised to learn of the closure and that it is talking to several retailers interested in locating at the site. "We anticipate being able to make an announcement in the near future about another wonderful retailer joining our center," the post read.

Concord resident Ashley Bittle, who planned to visit the store Friday afternoon, registered for her upcoming wedding at REI because she is a frequent shopper.

"Nothing compares to REI," she said. "This store is usually pretty busy. I can understand the closure because this is not the most recreational area compared to other places in the Bay Area. (REI) is relatively expensive."

The Brentwood location will be open this weekend exclusively for customers who need to pick up items that were shipped to the store or items that have been serviced. The hours for these services will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Starting Monday, items can picked up at the Concord store, 1975 Diamond Blvd., Suite 100. For more information, call 800-426-4840.

Other stores that have closed recently at the The Streets include Banana Republic, LOFT and Coldwater Creek.
