CONCORD -- A 99 Cents Only store on Clayton Road will not be allowed to sell beer and wine.
The company wanted to dedicate 12 linear feet of shelf space to room temperature alcoholic beverages in its 20,000-square-foot store at 4665 Clayton Road.
The store did not plan to sell single cans of beer nor would it charge 99 cents for the alcohol. To assuage concerns about crime, the company suggested hiring a security guard and having cashiers participate in training through the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
Police reported that alcohol-related crimes, including disturbances and reports of intoxicated people, occur frequently in the neighborhood where the 99 Cents Only store is located. The City Council agreed with police and decided that the area, which already has five businesses that sell alcohol, did not need another.
