Chase San Jose branch marks 1,000 for state

Chase Bank has opened its 1,000th branch in California by launching a bank outlet in central San Jose.

The branch is at 2436 Almaden Road near the corner of Almaden Expressway, south of the city's downtown district.

"In three years, we've gone from not being in California at all to being the second-largest bank in the state," said Ryan McInerney, CEO of Consumer Banking with Chase. "We now serve 15 million Californians and we feel like this is home to us."

Chase has opened nearly 300 new branches in California in just the past four years. Its rapid growth has created 7,800 new jobs.

The banking firm now employs nearly 21,000 California residents.

Shares of Bay Area energy firms slump

Shares of several energy companies with major oil refineries in the Bay Area sagged Monday after Wall Street's view of the firms soured somewhat.

San Ramon-based Chevron, which has a Richmond refinery, dropped 0.7 percent and closed at $109.75.

Tesoro, owner and operator of the Golden Eagle refinery near Martinez, was the hardest hit of the local group, plunging 5.5 percent to finish at $40.22.

Valero, which owns a Benicia refinery, tumbled 2.7 percent and closed at $34.35. ConocoPhillips, owner of a Rodeo refinery, fell 1.1 percent to finish at $59.17.

Multiple analysts changed their ratings on energy and coal companies Monday and issued some downgrades.

Central Garden names John Ranelli as CEO

Walnut Creek-based Central Garden & Pet has named John Ranelli as its new president and CEO, the pet, lawn and garden supplies company said Monday.

Ranelli will take over as the top boss at Central Garden & Pet effective at the company's annual shareholder's meeting, to be held Feb. 11. Ranelli has been on the board of directors of Central Garden since 2010. He will remain a board member after he becomes CEO.

Bill Brown, who currently is chairman and CEO, will retain his title as chairman of Central Garden.

Ranelli has more than 40 years of experience in consumer products and branding. He has served as CEO of Mikasa, a dinnerware, crystal and home accessories firm; CEO of the principal owner of the FosterGrant eyewear company; and CEO of Woolrich, an outdoor clothing firm.
