MENLO PARK -- Facebook invited members of the media March 7 to its headquarters to unveil changes to its signature News Feed, the second time in less than two months that the social network has held such an event at its headquarters.
The News Feed is the face of Facebook, the string of friends' updates and other news that users of the world's most popular social network interact with on desktop and mobile versions of the service. It is also the most lucrative portion of the site for Facebook, which places ads next to and in the News Feed, as well as Sponsored Stories.
"Come see a new look for News Feed," the invite says, with only the date -- Thursday,
Facebook will hold the event at its Menlo Park headquarters, just as it did in January, when the company announced a new search engine called Graph Search, which allowed its 1 billion users to scour the social network for photos and information, while providing the company with lucrative new ways to sell advertising.
After the invitation to that event -- which was more vague than the March 7 invitation, saying only "come and see what we're building" -- arrived, Facebook stock took a big bounce, topping $30 for the first time since July. At that time, Facebook had not held a large press event in more than a year, and had not assembled the media at its new headquarters;
The company's stock again spiked Friday after the March 7 invitation arrived. At 9:30 a.m., before the invite arrived in inboxes, Facebook shares were trading for $27.17, down 8 cents on the day; by 10:15, shares were trading for $27.80, a gain of 2 percent from the Thursday's closing price.
