King City police issued a warning Wednesday about a possible phone scam involving someone posing as an Internal Revenue Service representative.
A King City resident reported getting a call from a person who claimed to be from the IRS. The caller told the victim that money was owed the IRS, and if no one paid within four hours by pre-paid credit cards, arrests would be made at the victim's home.
Police said variations of the scam include demands to wire money immediately or to divulge credit card information over the phone.
Police said government agencies don't work this way, and a bona fide federal official would likely send a letter to set up an appointment.
Acting Police Chief Bruce Miller said anyone who gets such a call should report it to police and hold off sending any money.
