BERKELEY -- The Bay Area's newest craft brewery is serving up sour brews.

The Rare Barrel opened a public tasting room just in time for New Year celebrations. The tasting room, open on Fridays and Saturdays for now, serves up sour beers, a style that's increasingly popular among craft beer aficionados and known for having a tart and acidic flavor distinct from your traditional lagers. Jay Goodwin is the brewmaster behind concoctions that use raspberries, apricots and strawberries.

The tasting room has 12 taps, including two guest beers and wine, and serves a light menu of salad and paninis. It's open Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 940 Parker St.
