Auto parts and car repair company Pep Boys is undergoing a massive store remodeling and hiring throughout the Bay Area.

Pep Boys is adding jobs to nine stores in the Bay Area and looking to hire store managers, entry-level auto mechanics and master-level technicians at locations in San Jose, Vallejo, Sunnyvale, Union City, San Carlos, San Leandro, Pleasant Hill and Rohnert Park. Pep Boys began remodeling stores in February and plans for most Bay Area locations to be complete by the end of May. Stores have remained open during the remodel, which aims to elevate the national chain from a do-it-yourself retailer that sells car parts and offers basic repairs to a store focused on high-end consumer service. In addition to revamping stores with customer lounges with Wi-Fi and sleek auto consultant stations, Pep Boys is also creating customer-service training programs for staff.

Philadelphia-based Pep Boys has disappointed Wall Street with declining sales, which saw a 1.2 percent drop in 2013. This week the company announced another disappointing quarter that ended Feb. 1, when sales plummeted $35.1 million. In the last year, stocks have declined from a per-share high of almost $14 in November to just over $10.
