LANSING, Mich. -- Uber, the mobile ride service, is expanding its footprint in Michigan.

San Francisco-based Uber says service starts Thursday in Flint, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Lansing. Uber is already available in Ann Arbor and the Detroit area.

Uber use smartphone apps to dispatch drivers who use their own personal vehicles to give people rides. The drivers then share the fares they collect with the company.

The company's Michigan promotion includes free rides for passengers in the four new cities.

Uber says it operates in 140 cities in 40 countries.
