Coach Jeff Tedford said again Monday that he has no idea what bowl the Bears are going to.

Invitations will be extended no later than Sunday, and most speculation has Cal (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12) going to the Alamo or Holiday bowl, which pick second and third, respectively, among Pac-12-affiliated bowls.

It's highly unlikely the Bears would slip any further than the Sun Bowl, No. 4 in the pecking order.

Cal won't resume practice until Friday, giving coaches a chance to hit the recruiting trail. Tedford said being able to boast of a bowl berth is nice when talking with recruits, but that a renovated Memorial Stadium -- set to open next season -- and the newly constructed Student-Athlete High Performance Center are the big selling points.

"For 10 years here, we've been showing (recruits) pictures of things that are going to come," Tedford said. "It's nice that we can now walk kids through a facility that's up to speed with our competitors."

  • Linebacker Mychal Kendricks had said he wanted to be the Pac-12's leading tackler, and while having to settle for third place in the conference, he wound up being named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of conference head coaches.

    "He's been the backbone of our defense," Tedford said. "I think Mike would be the first to admit he couldn't have done it without his teammates. But he's worked very hard, and people recognize he's somebody you have to pay attention to as you game

    Kendricks was not expecting the honor to come his way.

    "There's so many great players in the Pac-12," he said. "I busted my butt, I worked hard. I was hoping I got it; it just came by surprise."

  • Redshirt freshman receiver Kaelin Clay is no longer with the program.

    "He's taking classes somewhere to help his academic situation," Tedford said.

  • Freshman cornerback Stefan McClure, who suffered a knee injury Friday against Arizona State, will have an MRI on Tuesday. Tedford expects to have linebackers Chris McCain (concussion) and David Wilkerson (knee) back for the bowl game.

  • Kicker Giorgio Tavecchio was named the Pac-12 special teams player of the week. He was 4 for 4 on field goals and 5 for 5 on extra points for a career-high 17 points in Cal's 47-38 win at Arizona State.
