Cal coach Jeff Tedford is voting in the USA Today/Coaches top-25 poll this season.

Unlike most coaches, Tedford was willing to disclose details of his ballot. And unlike some coaches, Tedford has taken a perfectly reasonable assessment of his team and his rivals.

Tedford's preseason No. 1 is USC, which is third in the Coaches' poll but expected to be ranked first or second in the Associated Press preseason poll (release date: Aug. 18).

Tedford's No. 2 team is Louisiana State, which is No. 1 in the Coaches' poll, and he has Alabama third.

Cal's archrival, Stanford, is No. 18 on Tedford's preseason ballot -- matching the Cardinal's ranking in the Coaches' poll.

Tedford did not rank the Bears, who don't appear in the poll and are not among the "others receiving votes."

San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre is also voting this year but opted against revealing any details of his ballot.

Stanford coach David Shaw was asked to participate but declined. He felt he didn't have the time to do it properly.
