BERKELEY -- Mayor Tom Bates says he can "already taste the bourbon."

The 1961 Cal grad has a boozy bet proffered by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer on the women's Final Four on Sunday when the Bears square off against the Louisville Cardinals in New Orleans.

Bates gets 10 bottles of Kentucky bourbon if the Bears win. If they lose, he sends Fischer 10 bottles of California Cabernet Sauvignon Cuvee Venus from Narsai David Estates worth $500.

Fischer spokesman Chris Poynter said "the mayor and his staff certainly are going to enjoy the nice wine from California."

So how much will Fischer be out of pocket when he sends 10 bottles of bourbon to Berkeley?

"Bourbon made in Louisville is so valuable you cannot put a price on it," Poynter said, adding that Fischer's office has a fully stocked bourbon bar.
