For a team that had so much potential and promise at the start of the season, how did the Cal men's basketball team get here, to a first-round exit to No. 13 seed Hawaii in the NCAA Tournament?

A string of on- and off-the-court events led to Cal's demise on Friday with a 77-66 loss to the Warriors in Spokane.

It began Monday when the university fired assistant coach Yann Hufnagel after finding he had violated the school's sexual harassment policy. It continued later in the week when the injury bug disrupted Cal's backcourt and put the Golden Bears in a bad spot prior to tip off.

Cal has not advanced past the second round since 1997 when it reached the Sweet 16.
