An Upland police officer shot the man shortly after 8 p.m. Friday during a pursuit.
Officers had responded to the skate park at Upland Memorial Park on San Bernardino Road near 13th Avenue after receiving reports of shots fired in the area, according to officers.
Officers came upon a man they believed may have been involved in the incident, according to reports.
As they approached, the man reportedly raised a handgun and pointed it at the officers, authorities said.
At least one officer fired at the man, striking and wounding him, according to authorities.
The man ran a short distance until he collapsed in the parking lot of a small strip mall at San Bernardino Road and Foothill Boulevard.
The wounded man was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. He was set to be arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, police said.
Police on Monday refused to comment on the case or if any arrests were made. The officers said sheriff's officials were investigating.
But sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said the department's detectives were only investigating the officer-involved shooting.
It wasn't clear what sparked the initial gunfire.
Nearby residents commented that the park has been a hotbed of illegal activity for some time, attracting drug dealers and addicts.
