A Hawthorne police officer shot a robbery suspect in the leg during a struggle to arrest him in Gardena, sheriff's deputies said Friday.

No officers were injured during the Thursday night shooting in the 3100 block of 141st Street, sheriff's Deputy Benjamin Grubb said.

Deputies did not release many details about the events that led to the gunfire but said Hawthorne officers responded about 7:30 p.m. to a robbery in the 3100 block of Rosecrans Avenue.

Three robbery suspects were seen racing away in a vehicle that was discovered later in the 2900 block of 139th Street in Gardena. One suspect was arrested, Grubb said.

Police surrounded the area, finding another suspect. The third suspect was located on 141st Street about 9:25 p.m.

"A struggle ensued as Hawthorne police officers attempted to detain the man," Grubb said. "During the struggle, an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was shot and wounded."

The suspect was taken to a local hospital and was expected to recover. The suspects' names were not released.
