A motorcyclist was reported in extremely critical condition Thursday evening following a crash that closed the northbound lanes of Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Beach for several hours, police said.

The motorcyclist was injured at 4:30 p.m. as he headed north on Sepulveda. A car traveling south made a left turn in front of him to go east on Tennyson Street. The motorcyclist hit the car broadside.

An off-duty paramedic provided aid until firefighters arrived.

An earlier report said the motorcyclist had died, but police said he was in surgery late Thursday at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
