An elderly driver lost control of his car, struck three vehicles, crashed through three concrete barriers and drove half way along the Manhattan Beach pier, police said Thursday.
Five people were injured in the series of crashes that possibly occurred when the driver's brakes failed on his white Cadillac, police said.
Witnesses told police the driver was honking his horn as he headed west on Manhattan Beach Boulevard at 6:20 p.m., unable to stop. He struck a van at Morningside Avenue, continued on and hit another car at Highland Avenue, struck a third car at Ocean Avenue, and slammed into three concrete pylons at the entrance to the pier, sheering two off, Manhattan Beach police Lt. Christian Eichenlaub said.
The crash helped to slow the car and enable the driver to roll to a stop on the pier.
The driver was unhurt. Two people were injured in the earlier vehicle crashes, and three people, including one who had to dive out of the car's way, were struck with concrete debris. Their injuries were considered minor.
Police will investigate whether the driver's brakes failed, Eichenlaub said.
