Monterey firefighters and AMR medics help load the victim of a multi-vehicle crash into a CalStar helicopter across from the Monterey Sports Center in Monterey on Tuesday.
A large portion of a major downtown Monterey intersection was shut down for 40 minutes Tuesday during a six-vehicle crash that included a Pepsi delivery tractor trailer truck.

One person had to be extricated and was taken by helicopter to Santa Clara Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The accident occurred about 12:30 p.m. at Del Monte Avenue and Washington Street. The delivery truck was traveling westbound on Del Monte when it ran into the back of three vehicles that were stopped for a red light, police said. One of those vehicles and the delivery truck were pushed into the intersection, where they struck two other vehicles that were eastbound on Del Monte, police said.

One other injured driver decided not to go to the hospital, said Monterey fire Division Chief Stewart Roth.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
