Robert Alleman Jr. was arrested at about 1 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 2700 block of East Spaulding Street, said Nancy Pratt, a Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman.
Police found him there after witnesses said he struck Adolfo Lopez-Perez, 37, as the victim was walking south across Pacific Coast Highway near Junipero Avenue. Witnesses said Alleman was driving a green 1997 Geo Prism and fled a short distance in the car before getting out and running to the home on Spaulding, Pratt said.
Lopez-Perez, who was not in a crosswalk, died at the scene, Pratt said.
Officers located the abandoned Geo a few blocks away from the crash site, near Temple Avenue and 17th Street, she noted.
Alleman was booked in lieu of $50,000 bail, and posted bond after 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to jail records. Because he is no longer in custody, police and prosecutors have several weeks before they file formal charges, authorities said.
