Applications will be accepted until noon Nov. 21 to fill a vacancy on the Scotts Valley Water District's Board of Directors.
Board members must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter in the district, and able to attend monthly meetings the second Thursday of each month, according to an announcement released from the district.

Nov. 17 Jiu Jitsu event benefits Toys for Tots organization
Claudio Franca Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will present its annual "Black Belts' Favorite Techniques" and Holiday Toy Drive event 2-4 p.m. Nov. 17, at 2-1507 E. Cliff Drive to support Toys for Tots.
The interactive exhibition-style seminar will feature Master Claudio Franca's black belt students and instructors demonstrating their favorite techniques for self-defense and competition, including throws, take-downs, grappling and submissions.
The format will allow attendees to practice the newly-learned techniques; exercise clothing or a traditional Jiu Jitsu gi is recommended.
The price of admission is a donation of one or more new, unwrapped toys to Toys for Tots.

Valley Women's Club seeks new board members
The Valley Women's Club of the San Lorenzo Valley is searching for new board members to serve for two years starting in 2013. Applications are due by Nov. 19.
The board carries out the group's mission of community action, awareness and leadership in environmental, educational, social and political concerns that affect residents of the San Lorenzo Valley.

'Black FUR-iday' adoption event slated for Nov. 23
The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter and local animal welfare organizations will hold the second annual "Black FUR-iday" adoption event 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 23 at the shelter, 2200 Seventh Ave.
All cats, dogs and rabbits with more than 50 percent black fur will be offered for adoption for $25, while animals without black fur can be adopted at half price, according to a news release from the shelter.
All adoptions include services including spay/neuter, microchip and vaccinations.

City seeks representative for aging agency
The City of Capitola is seeking applications for its representative on the Advisory Council to the Area Agency on Aging of Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties. The deadline to apply is Nov. 26.
The advisory council meets from 10 a.m. to noon on the second Wednesday of each month at 234 Santa Cruz Ave. Aptos.
