Delayed by rain Saturday morning, officials planned to open the new new hybrid high occupancy toll lanes along the Harbor (110) Freeway in Los Angeles Saturday night, officials said.
The 11-mile "demonstration project" between Adams Boulevard and the Gardena (91) Freeway was initially slated to open at midnight Saturday, but was delayed by rain, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority officials said in a written statement.
They lanes were expected open at 10 p.m. Saturday, according to MTA spokesman Rick Jager.
In addition to vehicles containing more than one person and motorcycles, solo drivers will be able to access the lane by setting up a "FasTrak" account and installing a transponder in their vehicle, Metro officials said.
"Enhanced enforcement" will be in place to make sure drivers comply with the new rules, officials added.
The cost for solo drivers to use the ExpressLanes will vary from 24 cents to $1.40 per mile, depending on traffic, according to the MTA. Overhead electronic signs will display the current price.
A similar demonstration project is planned for the 10 Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley early next year.
The Metro ExpressLanes program, a $290 million project, is primarily funded by a $210 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
