LOS ANGELES - An 89-year-old Los Angeles man who was beaten aboard an MTA bus died of natural causes, authorities announced Wednesday.

David Martinez was assaulted Oct. 21 on a bus near Venice Boulevard in Los Angeles, close to Culver City, for reasons that remain unclear.

Martinez was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center but left the hospital, then checked himself back in Nov. 6 and died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

An autopsy on Martinez's body concluded that the cause of death was hypertension and atherosclerosis, and not as a result of the assault, according to Lt. John Corina of the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau.

Luke Schoedel, 35, was arrested at the scene of the attack and charged with elder or dependent adult abuse and battery with injury on transit personnel. He could have faced a murder charge if the death was related to the beating, authorities said.

Schoedel is due back in court Dec. 11, when a date is expected to be set for a preliminary hearing.
