HAWTHORNE — A Hawthorne man who dropped his personal cellphone after allegedly robbing another man of his cellphone has been arrested, police said Thursday.

Wilford Thomas, 47, of Hawthorne was identified as the suspected thief from his own phone, police said.

The robbery occurred Nov. 10 as a victim staying at the Comfort Inn motel in Hawthorne was out for a walk. Thomas allegedly rode up to him on a bike and snatched his cellphone from his hands as the victim was composing a text, police said.

As Thomas rode away, he crashed into a pole. His windbreaker jacket came open and he dropped his own phone.

Detectives identified him as the owner and arrested him Tuesday on suspicion of robbery.
