SAN PEDRO -- Capt. Dick McKenna, executive director of the Marine Exchange of Southern California, has announced he will retire in March.

McKenna has presided over the San Pedro facility since 2008 and, before that, had been deputy executive director since 1993.

A Navy veteran and San Pedro resident, McKenna was instrumental in establishing the Vessel Traffic Service at the Marine Exchange, which monitors and facilitates the safe navigation of commercial ship traffic within a 25-mile arc around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

He also recently oversaw the installation of a renewable energy project, consisting of an 80-kilowatt solar power project complemented by a wind turbine system.

McKenna, 70, will retire March 31.
