Author to speak Nov. 27 on domestic violence

Award-winning author Jan Goff-LaFontaine will speak to members of Soroptimist International of Capitola-By-The-Sea at 6 p.m. Nov. 27 at the Live Oak Family Resource Center, 1740 17th Ave.

She will discuss her book "Women in Shadow and Light: Journeys from Abuse to Healing," which features stories of 40 women who overcame domestic violence.

Community Foundation hosts family wealth seminar Nov. 28

Community Foundation Santa Cruz County will host two seminars Nov. 28 for donors and their advisers on how to use a family-before-fortune approach to managing and transferring family wealth. The topic is how to avoid traditional planning failures.

Speakers will be attorney Rod Zeeb, co-founder and head of The Heritage Institute, and attorney Steven Weldon, director of leadership giving at UC Santa Cruz who was formerly with the Wycoff firm in Watsonville for 20 years.

Participants can sign up for one of two identical sessions, at 8 a.m. and at noon. The cost is $30.

Holiday book sale set for Dec. 1

The Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries will host a holiday book sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 1 at the downtown branch, 224 Church St. The sale will be held before the holiday parade.

Vintage, children's and holiday-themed books, as well as popular fiction, will be available. Books will be used but in gift condition.

Grey Bears present 39th holiday dinner Dec. 2

California Grey Bears will sponsor its 39th annual Holiday Dinner for 1,500 senior citizens 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church St.

There will be a home-cooked holiday dinner for people 55 and up plus local entertainment.

Santa Cruz Dance Company starts at 11:25 a.m., followed by Elaine's Dance Studio at 11:50 a.m., Tehauni Dancers at 12:30 p.m. and International Academy of Dance at 12:55 p.m.

Violinist Benjamin Rivers will play short selections during breaks.

Meals and groceries will be delivered to 1,400 homebound seniors not able to attend.

Watsonville author talks about new adventure book

Writer Meade Fischer, a Watsonville resident, will speak Nov. 29 about his newest book, "With the Sea Beside Me: An Intimate Guide to California's Central and North Coast."

Fischer will cover camping, kayaking, hiking and exploring the coast from Santa Barbara to the Oregon border.

The guide contains recommendations for brewpubs, kayak launches, back roads and parks, as well as his personal perspective on the places he describes.

His talk, which includes a slideshow, is planned for 7-8 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Resource Center for Nonviolence, 612 Ocean St.

Donations would be appreciated.

Shadowbrook hosts museum fundraiser

Dining at Shadowbrook Restaurant on Dec. 4 will help benefit the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History.

The restaurant's Community Tuesday program supports local nonprofit organizations by providing them with portions of the profits made that night.

Diners who come in on Dec. 4 should mention the Museum of Natural History and 33 percent of their purchase in either the dining room or the bar will go to the East Cliff Drive institution.

Shadowbrook Restaurant is at 1750 Wharf Road in Capitola.
