LA VERNE - Cowboy hats and choreography were the order of the day when a flash mob took over part of the parking lot of a Fantastic Sams here on Friday.

Bonnie Reed's country western line dancing class, sponsored by the Claremont Recreation Department, formed a line and danced to an upbeat tune.

"You have easy line dances, intermediate, and advanced," Reed said. "It's great for everyone and it gets people to smile, laugh and just enjoy life, so it's very, very fun and everyone can do it."

Several members of the class, who work at the hair salon at 2365 Foothill Blvd., said the event was a way to help kick off color specials at the salon for November.

"We invited all of Bonnie's line dancing group down here to do a flash mob in front of the salon and we invited everyone in for refreshments, did a raffle and gave out coupons," said Amanda Wilson, who manages the La Verne salon.

Wilson and assistant manager Brenda Castillo have been students for the past six months.

"It was hard at first if you're not coordinated," Castillo said. "It took us a while in our beginners' class and then we moved on to the intermediate class."

Wilson said anyone can do country line dancing "even if you're not coordinated."

"It just takes practice," she said. "It's just a great workout, and it's fun, too."

Flash mobs, which have gained popularity in recent years, are large groups of people who converge on a public space and perform to the surprise of onlookers.
