APTOS -- A California Highway Patrol officer totaled a patrol car after crashing into the center guard rail on Highway 1 while trying to avoid a deer, CHP officials said.
The accident occurred about 1:45 a.m. Sunday while the officer and his partner were traveling north on the highway near Freedom Boulevard on routine patrol, CHP spokesman Grant Boles said.
The driver swerved to miss the deer, which had darted out, and the car spun out before slamming into the center divider, Boles said.
The CHP officer in the passenger seat was taken to Dominican Hospital with moderate injuries, Boles said.
He was treated and released; the driver was not injured.
No other cars were involved in the accident.
Boles said deer running across the road is common danger this time of year.
He advised drivers to be cautious and to drive defensively.
