MAH's Family Art Day Dec. 8

The Museum of Art & History is hosting Family Art Day: Family Funnies with Elijah Pfotenhauer on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 2-4 p.m. at 705 Front St.

The event, which costs $5, will include Pfotenhauer introducing participants to the elements and principals of drawing through the basics of cartooning. Working collaboratively, family members will be encouraged to have fun turning some of their favorite family memories, such as a road trip, a vacation or a dinner party, into humorous comic strips.

Young Life to hold silent auction

Young Life of Santa Cruz County is holding a silent auction fundraiser 2-4 p.m. Dec. 9 at Calvary Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 532 Center St.

Young Life is a local nonprofit that works with students in junior high and high school.

The annual Light Up the Valley holiday competition is open to homeowners, businesses and nonprofits.

The San Lorenzo Valley Chamber of Commerce will judge entries Dec. 15, and winners will be announced Dec. 16 at a potluck supper at Felton Community Hall on Highway 9.

County clerk to offer wedding ceremonies on 12/12/12

For couples who want to make 12/12/12 their wedding day, the Santa Cruz County Clerk's Office will offer wedding ceremonies every half hour from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"And, if needed, we will provide more time slots as long as we have couples wishing to get married," Clerk Gail Pellerin said.

The cost of the ceremony is $100. Couples will receive a special souvenir marriage certificate commemorating the beginning of their lives together on 12/12/12.

A time must be reserved by calling 454-2060 or visiting the clerk's office, 701 Ocean St., Room 210. If couples have previously called and were told the day was booked, Pellerin asked they call again now that more appointments are available.

Couples must have a valid marriage license prior to the scheduled ceremony and have at least one witness present for public ceremonies. No witness is required for confidential marriages.

A license is issued by the clerk for $90. The bride and groom must appear in person with valid identification, complete a form providing personal information and take an oath.

Holiday concert benefits SPCA and music scholarships

Be Natural Music will present its second Holiday Concert at 5 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Boardwalk Bowl's Coaster's Bar and Grill.

Bands that will perform include Walkaway Raven, Slime, 3-Hole Punch and Alter Ego.

Proceeds from this family-friendly concert will be donated to the Santa Cruz SPCA and Be Natural Music's Scholarship Program, which provides financial assistance to young talented musicians and children in need who are interested in learning music.

Admission is $3 (ages 3 and younger are free). Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the event. Those who attend are asked to bring dog and cat food (wet or dry), collars, toys, blankets and beds for animals. For information, call 515-8369.

Class for teen drivers coming up

The California Highway Patrol will present a Start Smart class for teen drivers and their parents on Dec. 18 at the Santa Cruz Police Department.

The class teaches young drivers about safe driving habits to avoid collisions. Traffic collisions are the No. 1 cause of death among 15- to 20-year-olds.

The class is free and takes place at 6:30 p.m. in the community room at 115 Center St. To register, call 662-0511.
