An intoxicated Old Navy employee injured two Northridge Mall security officers Saturday night when they attempted to stop him from driving, according to Salinas police.
Jose Luis Rangel, 21, was playing loud music in his car around 9 p.m. when the officers took his his keys and put them on the hood, police said.
The officers encouraged Rangel to call for a ride but he broke free, took his keys and "a struggle took place," police said.
Rangel then put the car in reverse, accelerated and knocked both officers to the ground, police said.
One of the officers had a head injury and was flown to a hospital in San Jose as a precaution. The other officer had minor injuries.
Rangel abandoned his car but was later spotted by a California Highway Patrol helicopter.
Police said Rangel was arrested on charges of felony driving under the influence and hit and run.
Salinas Cmdr. Sheldon Bryan said Rangel will likely be arraigned Monday or Tuesday.
Northridge marketing director Tamara Swanson said the mall's "thoughts and prayers" were with the two officers.
