The city of Los Angeles' Westside Winter Shelter program will start Saturday and, for the first time, will offer support services to those wanting to get off the streets, it was announced Tuesday.

The shelter will offer a pickup and drop-off location at the Los Angeles Police Department substation at Venice Beach (1530 W. Ocean Front Walk). Pickups are from 4:30-6 p.m., and returns are set for 7:30 a.m. the next morning.

The shelter at the West LA Armory will offer 160 beds.

The program, managed by First to Serve, will offer two on-site case managers who can help clients transition to permanent supportive housing, find jobs, and offer medical services and health care resources, Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl's Office announced.

An expanded program last year used Westchester Park as a pickup and drop-off location, prompting concerns about an uptick in crime in the park.

This year's program ends March 1.
