Starting Dec. 12, Megabus.com will start running buses to Las Vegas, San Francisco and Oakland. The buses headed north also will make a stop in San Jose, and those headed for Las Vegas will make a stop in Riverside.
Buses will leave from Union Station's Patsaouras Transit Plaza.
Megabus.com, a subsidiary of Coach USA, operated in Los Angeles for about a year, starting in 2007, but ended its service because of a lack of demand.
Mike Alvich, the vice president of marketing and public relations, said he was confident Megabus.com would be a success this time around, in part because it offers "double-decker buses with WiFi and power outlets."
Megabus.com operates on a model similar to Southwest Airlines, Alvich said. Fares booked 30-45 days in advance can go for as cheap as $1. Tickets bought closer to the departure date will be more expensive -- up to $40 for some trips, depending on demand.
To drum up interest in the service, Megabus is guaranteeing $1 fares on all travel Dec. 12-19.

The company estimates it will handle about 247,000 customers in the Los Angeles area over the coming year.
