Torrance's two major hospitals received top grades in a nationwide survey measuring patient safety.

Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center and Torrance Memorial Medical Center received a letter grade of A from The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit group operated by large purchasers of health benefits.

Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center in Harbor City also received a grade of A.

The A through F scores were based upon 26 publicly available measures of patient safety.

The 2012 survey of more than 2,600 hospitals grew out of a report that found almost 100,000 Americans die annually from preventable medical errors in hospitals.

About 790 hospitals received an A grade.

"Hospitals like this that earn an A have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

Local hospitals receiving B grades were County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance, Memorial Hospital of Gardena and Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in San Pedro. A total of 678 surveyed hospitals received a grade of B.

Marina del Rey Hospital received a C grade, one of 1,004 hospitals to do so.

Surprisingly, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood received a grade of F, one of only 25 hospitals surveyed to do so.

"Leapfrog's primary mission is to create a more transparent health care system," said Keith Reissaus, board chair of The Leapfrog Group.

"Leapfrog is unbiased in telling the whole truth about how hospitals are doing, no matter how much discomfort that causes many of them. Consumers deserve A hospitals, and someday we may see all hospitals earning A's. However, we are not there yet."

Smaller hospitals and, for a variety of reasons, some others do not report their results.
