POMONA - Friends and family, still in shock over the unexpected death of a 37-year-old mother, wife, daughter and Pomona police officer, will celebrate her life Saturday.

Rochelle M. McCrary of Rancho Cucamonga, who was a 16-year veteran of the Pomona Police Department, died while off duty on Thanksgiving Day.

"She was just a great person and a very dedicated employee," said Jaime Gutierrez, the president of the Pomona Police Officers Association.

"She was always happy and smiling."

Gutierrez said he doesn't just remember McCrary as a good officer but as a friend. The two forged a friendship when Gutierrez was McCrary's supervisor in the Police Department's detective bureau.

"This is really tough for me," he said.

A private service will be held for McCrary at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. George Catholic Church, 505 W. Palm Ave., Ontario. She will be buried at Belleview Cemetery at 1240 W. G St., Ontario.

McCrary was awarded the Police Department's Medal of Courage after an incident in 2000 in which she and another officer were involved in a shooting, police officials said.

The Police Department will honor McCrary in the days to come, including lowering the flag outside the station to half-staff.

Monday's City Council meeting will adjourn in McCrary's memory, Deputy City Manager Mark Gluba said.

The Police Officers Association's members and members will hold a fundraiser for McCrary's family from 4 to 9 p.m.
