LONG BEACH -- Police have identified a 79-year-old man who was killed after he tried to cross a busy Bixby Knolls street against a red light and was struck by a pickup truck.

Donald Phillips was trying to cross Atlantic Avenue at Burlinghall Drive at about 10:42 p.m. Wednesday when he was hit by a 1997 Ford pickup driven by a 59-year-old Long Beach man, said Nancy Pratt, a Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman.

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics worked on Phillips as they rushed him to a local hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition Wednesday night. His injuries, however, proved too great and he was pronounced dead Thursday, Pratt said.

The driver of the pickup remained at the scene and told officers he did not see Phillips, who was crossing against a red light and who did not have the right of way, until it was too late. Though he tried to stop, the driver was unable to do so. Rain soaked roads may have contributed to the collision, Pratt said.

"There are no charges pending against the driver at this time," she said.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about the incident is asked call Accident Investigations Detective Richard Birdsall at 562-570-7355.
