By the time the Friday deadline arrived, the newspaper's lobby was practically overflowing with basketballs, baseballs, footballs and just about every other kind of ball.
Our goal once again was 1,000 balls. And once again, we hit the number.
That translates to a very merry Christmas for a lot of kids who participate in programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor.
"I feel supported by the community," said 13-year-old Cynthia Perez of Wilmington. "To know people care about the club ... I don't know what to say. I'm so thankful.
This was the Breeze's 13th annual ball drive. In that time, we've collected about 11,000 balls.
A special thanks to the students at Vista Grande Elementary School in Rancho Palos Verdes. They contributed around 200 balls.
And once again, the family of Allison Dewart, a West High girls soccer team captain who was killed by a drunken driver in 2006, brought boxes filled with soccer balls.
