SCOTTS VALLEY - A California Highway Patrol officer prevented a woman from running into traffic on Mount Hermon Road recently after she said she wanted to kill herself during a traffic stop, officers said.

The 54-year-old woman was pulled over on Mount Hermon Road near Covenant Lane on Friday afternoon after an officer saw her speaking on a cell phone while driving, the CHP said.

When Officer Tyler Pudge came up to the car window to talk to her, the woman said she was going to kill herself and then opened the door and ran into the road, Sgt. Kevin Enox said.

Pudge ran around the back of her car, grabbed her and pulled her out of the street before anyone was hurt, Enox said.

The woman was taken to Dominican Hospital, he said.
