MOSS LANDING - A surfer who died Friday after falling unconscious while surfing near the Moss Landing harbor jetty was Mark MacKenzie, 61, of Salinas, the Santa Cruz County Coroner's Office said.

MacKenzie, owner of The 4M Ranch on San Benancio Canyon Road in Salinas, was surfing near the north jetty about 9:30 a.m. when other surfers saw him unconscious in the water, firefighters said.

He was declared dead at Watsonville Community Hospital, Coroner's officials said.

MacKenzie was surfing during one of the highest tides of the year. The waves were about 4-5 feet and the water was about 57 degrees, according to Surfline.com.

Two surfers brought him up on the jetty's rocks and performed CPR in an attempt to revive him. Firefighters initially had trouble reaching him because of waves and slippery rocks on the jetty.

Coroner's Sgt. Alan Burt said an autopsy will be performed early this week to determine the cause of MacKenzie's death.
